A group of DIT Photography students will launch under the name of UNITY. It is an online project featuring fifteen reflections on the use of photography, with individuals and social justice advocates, to represent the impact of human rights and equality issues on people’s lives.
The launch will take place at The Library Project from 6pm on Thursday 27 April 2017. The UNITY website is live from 27 April at https://www.curating.photography
UNITY is about the role of the photographer as researcher. Beginning with an engagement with The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, the project has been developed online to make visible the surprises and rewards of creative collaboration and participation that might not otherwise be very apparent or accessible. The stories and images reflect on the challenges and rewards of finding visual strategies in advocacy work for social justice.
UNITY is a collaboration by third year DIT Photography students; they are Claire Behan, Jamie Brady, Suzanne Dillon, Róisín Duff, Georgina Havlin, Billie Johnson, Madison Koehler (Columbia College Chicago), Ciára McEntee, Brian Malone, Wanderley Massafelli, Manuela Mentel, Martin O’Neill, Max Ott, Billy Redmond and Deirdre Wray.
The group says that “the curatorial approach underpinning our development of this project online is characterised by accessibility, openness and collaboration. We align ourselves with those who work tirelessly to contribute to a culture of respect for human rights, equality and intercultural understanding within Ireland.”
An accompanying exhibition of images runs until 30 April at The Library Project.
