New Irish Works 2024 Cian Burke

New Irish Works 2023-2024 continues with
I fear that the magic has left this place,
by Cian Burke

Launch 6pm Thu 29 February
Running 29 February-31 March
At The Library Project

I fear that the magic has left this place is a body of work inspired by the story of Karl-Göran Persson who, having received a booklet titled Om Kriget Kommer (If War Comes) distributed by the Swedish government in 1961, began to fortify his small farmhouse until he had created a giant concrete bunker that could protect his entire community

I fear that the magic has left this place
reflects upon questions and themes such as, where we exist in relation to an imagined future/ or past, what it might mean to fortify a place, a home, for perceived threats that may or may not ever come and how cast-off objects and materials can function as symbolic portents – ultimately aiming to create a narrative in which real events and internalised hopes and fears are juxtaposed with fictional ideas and spaces.

The Library Project February Highlights

The Library Project February Highlights

As Ireland’s Art Bookshop, we have over 800 Photobook titles from Ireland and beyond, including some coveted collector’s items, contemporary artist books, over 200 titles in magazines and zines - local and international, carefully selected and fun titles for young people, as well as a diverse range of books on design, architecture, photo and art texts and theory, and other essentials for creatives.

Check out our February highlights and reccomendations:

-Last copies of Charles Peterson's Nirvana are still available. Send us a message so you can be first in the queue when new stock comes in! In the tradition of many great documentary photobooks, expands beyond Peterson’s iconic images of the band seen repeatedly over the last thirty years to highlight gems never before published.
-A study of Glendalough from a deeply personal perspective, Adrian O'Carroll's 30/30 is far from the traditional bucolic or dramatic landscapes typical for an area of such beauty, these images touch on something darker, more isolated and fragile.
-A stunning new monograph from Todd Hido, The End Sends Advance Warning picks up where his previous title Bright Black World left off, presenting some 80 new and previously unpublished landscape photographs.

-MacGuffin Issue 13: The Letter is dedicated to language’s basic material: the letter, a seemingly modest sign that can be a force of protest and connection.
-The latest issue of A Line Which Forms a Volume is a critical reader and symposium of graphic design-led research, bridging the gap between academia and the public sphere of design.
-Contemporary architectural criticism tends to focus on the theories and concepts behind buildings. Yet there is much to be learned by venturing beyond the library walls to contemplate the real buildings: the things themselves. This urge for “real living contact” is the impetus behind A Real Living Contact with the Things Themselves by renowned British architectural critic and scholar Irénée Scalbert.

All these and much more at The Library Project online and at number 4 Temple Bar Street, Dublin 2.

New Publication: Dust by Atong Atem

Just in! Dust is an experimental photobook by artist Atong Atem, in response to and commemorating the body of work, commissioned by Catherine E. McKinley for PhotoIreland Festival 2023. Dust explores the relationship of Dinka women who act as mediums and custodians to the earth, to the rupturing history of Christianity and colonialism.

On the occasion of this commission, South African riso publisher Dream Press designed and produced an edition of 200 risograph publication. Each publication is hand-bound, comprising unique details such as inserts, beaded stitching, with an embossed texture, silver effect, laser-cut book cover.

The commission and publication is supported by PhotoIreland and Arts Council of Ireland.
