Why we need your help?
This year for the first time the festival will be taking place in Limerick and Cork as well as Dublin. It is a fantastic development for the festival and it means the catalogue will be bigger than ever as it will include information on a larger number of events. We want to give the opportunity to people all around the country to get involved and engage with photography. The catalogue is free of charge for anyone who wants to pick one up so we need your help to ensure we reach as wide an audience as possible.

It will be distributed to libraries, colleges, galleries, museums and information centers so that the Irish public as well as tourists and visitors have access to this valuable and comprehensive resource. We need your help to ensure we have enough copies to go around as well as a few left over to bring to international photography festivals in order to showcase Irish photographic talent. The money raised will also cover the design of the catalogue so that it looks its best in time for the festival and does justice to the all the excellent work that will be on show.

So, go on! Help us make it a reality!

Daido Moriyama is one of the most important living photographers and photobook makers of current times.

His career began during the sixties in Tokyo, where he became a member of the influential Provoke group that created the most important style of Japanese post-war avantgarde photography. His oeuvre plays a central part in the establishment of Japanese photography as one of the important creative developments in the history of photography. In more than 50 years, Moriyama gained fame through his coarse, contrast-rich, partly unfocussed and highly grainy black-and-white photography, in which he deals which urban experiences, especially around the streets of Tokyo. His immense influence on young Japanese artists continues to date. Apart from black and white photography, Moriyama works with color, Polaroid’s, screen-printing, film, texts and installation. His fame is predominantly due to the more than 150 photobooks that he has continuously published—including masterpieces like Japan—A Photo Theatre (1968), Farewell Photography (1972), Light and Shadow 1982) and Shinjuku (2002).

The 6th Fotobook Festival (24-27 October 2013, Kassel, Germany) pays homage to Moriyama’s book opus through numerous program items, events and releases.

DAIDO BOOK SHOW

The Daido Book Show will form the center of the festival. This is an exhibition of all of Daido Moriyama’s books published so far where festival visitors will be able to view and touch these books. Rare or out-of-print books will be available as reprints, while all still available editions will be shown as originals.

DAIDO BOOK STUDIES

The exhibition Photobookstudies: The Daido Books will pay tribute to the book work of Moriyama with a new kind of display. After Studies on Ed van der Elsken and Stephen Shore shown in Paris, Hannover and Cologne, the german photobook specialist and curator Markus Schaden continues on all Daido books from Japan: A Photo Theatre up to Menu!

DAIDO WALLS

Inside the big documenta-Halle Kassel, the festival will show tableaus of large-sized Daido Moriyama prints. Each tableau is related to one of Moriyama’s photobook classics.

ON DAIDO

The volume On Daido will be a photographic anthology of visual statements and homages to Daido Moriyama made by internationally well-known photographers. This publication in its special form will be exclusively available during the 6th Fotobook Festival.

JAPANESE PHOTOBOOKS

Pecha Kucha-style presentations from publishers, book-makers, photographers, curators, bloggers… about their favorite contemporary Japanese photobooks.

GOLDEN GAI BAR

Japanese Bar Lounge: Drinks, Food, Beer and Music.

AND MORE

There will also be panels, book signings, on-site productions and further festival events. The annual festival Photobook Dummy Award for emerging photographers from around the world and the Best Photobook of the Year Award with their specially selected photobooks will also be presented.

POPCAP 13

Organised by Piclet, POPCAP 13 is the prize for Contemporary African Photography that is awarded to photographic portfolios dealing with African themes. Piclet is now calling for entries for POPCAP ’13 from March 19 until May 1 2013. There is no entry fee to participate and the competition is open to photographers of any age and descent. Eligible submissions are visual narratives comprising between 10 and 25 images, and must relate to an African theme. Submissions will be judged by a panel of eighteen international judges, who will select five portfolios. Make sure you read the rules of entry.

Exposure

The selected 5 entries will be included in Piclet’s artists directory
, and will be exhibited at:
- Basel, during Art | Basel 44

- PhotoIreland Festival 2013
- LagosPhoto 2013
In addition, one of the top 5 portfolios will get published on the European Photography magazine.

Deadline: 1st May 2013

POPCAP was awarded for the first time in 2012, with five winners chosen from 140 submissions by a panel of nine internationally-sourced judges. This year the five chosen works will be presented to both the international arts community and the general public during Art Basel 44 as well as at PhotoIreland Festival 2013. During POPCAP ‘13 we will aim to maintain a constant discourse regarding African topics through public events running alongside the exhibition, with the overall objective of enhancing awareness of African themes in the arts. Due to its extensive application in a day-to-day context, we consider photography to be the ideal medium from which to foster an unhindered exchange of ideas.

Celebrating its fourth edition, PhotoIreland Festival will examine the current state of Photography in Ireland, offering a simultaneous exhibition of new talent in Dublin, Cork, and Limerick.

In the last decade, the currency and relevance of the medium on the island has consistently generated a flourishing of awards, residencies, educational programmes, publications and exhibitions. More than ever, the work of Irish based photographers can be seen in museums and galleries as far away as Australia, Argentina, and China. The main exhibition of PhotoIreland Festival 2013 will reflect on the diversity of practices that constitute contemporary Photography in Ireland, and it will be accompanied by a special publication.

Official festival launch: Limerick 3 July, Dublin 4 July, and Cork 5 July.

David Galjaard, Concresco.
The Copper House Gallery, Dublin.
Opening: 13 July 2013

Fearing an attack from abroad, Albanian Stalinist leader Enver Hoxha had around 750,000 aboveground bunkers built during his time in power, from 1945 until his death in 1985. After the collapse of communism in 1991, the virtually indestructible bunkers were deprived of their unfulfilled purpose, serving purely as an obtrusive reminder of a dictatorship that had had lasted for almost fifty years. Today their massed presence seems mainly to impress foreigners, while Albanians themselves prefer to look to the future. Although accession to the EU is expected to take at least another ten years, the population has a sense of being ready for it.

In this documentary, the bunkers are used as a visual metaphor in the telling of a larger social story. They help to paint a picture of developments in a country that was the last in Europe to renounce communism and has set out on a demanding quest to become part of the capitalist West.

PhotoIreland Festival 2013 will bring to Dublin an exhibition of David Galjaard’s ‘Concresco’, winner of Portfolio 12 last year, and The Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Award 2012.

Cristina de Middel, The Afronauts.
The Copper House Gallery, Dublin.
Opening: 13 July 2013

In 1964, after gaining independence, Zambia started a space programme led by Edward Makuka Nkoloso, sole member of the unheard of National Academy of Science, Space Research and Philosophy. The programme, whose aim was to send the first African astronauts to Mars, was soon cancelled, becoming no more than an amusing anecdote in the country’s history. In ‘The Afronauts’ De Middel creates a subjective version of the story engaging with myths and truths.

The now sold-out book is comprised of a series of constructed colour photographs, sequenced alongside drawings and reproductions of letters, resulting in a fictional portrait of a national dream.

Cristina De Middel’s work, nominated for The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, will be exhibited during PhotoIreland Festival 2013 at The Copper House Gallery.

We felt it very relevant taking the opportunity this year to drive a wee bit of attention to the local produce during the festival, photographically speaking. We are confident to say that in Ireland many photographers and artists engaging with Photography have been producing outstanding projects, but that perhaps there has been a struggle to reach out to international audiences. Thanks to online magazines and Social Media some works have received recognition. In other cases, it was through personal efforts that exposure was gained in festivals and events abroad. But how about a collective effort?

In 2013, under the working title ‘Reviewing Photography in Ireland’, PhotoIreland seeks to represent the diversity of practices that constitute contemporary Photography in Ireland. Our aim is to offer a selection of work that would represent what the practice of Photography looks like in Ireland today, and bring it together in an exhibition that will take place simultaneously in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. The show will be illustrated by a special publication available during the festival. In November, the exhibition will travel to the NoFound Photo Fair, Paris, where your work will be presented to collectors, curators and other international professionals.

Do not miss this great opportunity to promote your practice in Ireland and abroad! Submit your works no later than 5pm on Friday, 1st March 2013.

Who should submit

The Main Show welcomes submissions by photographers and artists from Ireland & Northern Ireland, and those internationals based in the island, working on any theme. Please, make sure you read the guidelines.
